Air Cleaners Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
As we know, people spend the majority of your time inside your house…up to 90% of our time is spent indoors. An air cleaner on your furnace can ensure that the air you're breathing is as clean as possible. Indoor air quality has emerged as an issue because people have become more aware of airborne allergens and particulate matter that can cause respiratory and other health problems. Even the cleanest home can have poor air quality, whether from pet dander or the chemicals in our cleaners, carpets or furniture. To improve the air quality in their homes, some people try using small, portable air purifiers. But they cannot possibly clean all of the air in a home. Only a furnace-mounted electronic air cleaner can do that.
Way back in 2001, Popular Mechanics magazine wrote an article about three great furnace add-ons, and electronic air cleaners were one of them.
The article compared filters to air cleaners. A summary of the magazine's findings is included below.
A standard filter can only catch large particles, leaving anything below 10 to 20 microns to pass out into your home. To put that size in context, consider that fungi can be as small as 0.5 microns, and bacteria 0.3 microns.
To trap smaller particles, homeowners have a choice between accordion-style paper filters, also called media filters, and electronic air cleaners.
Paper filters can capture about 99% of pollen particles, which are about 6 microns in size. These filters can also capture about 65% of particles that measure 1 micron, and they actually capture more as they get dirtier. The insert needs to be replaced annually.
From an installation and maintenance perspective, electronic air cleaners are a little more work. You need professional installation of the cleaner, and each month you need to wash its cells, although most are dishwasher safe. Still, Popular Mechanics recommends electronic cleaners. Why? Because they trap the tiniest particles, which are more likely to settle in our lungs and cause health problems.
In fact, this article estimates that electronic air cleaners trap 70% of particles 0.3 microns in size, which is far more effective than a media filter.
If you have concerns about the condition of the air in your home, you should consider an electronic air cleaner. Designed for long life, it will give your family many years of clean air and better respiratory health.
