How it
Works
Air Purification Air Purification is the process by which we remove, destroy or render harmless bio-aerosols and volatile organic compounds in the air we breathe. Filters as noted, are used mostly to remove inert particulate from the air stream. Unfortunately, this accounts for on average only 35% of our indoor air quality problem. Microscopic gases and bio-aerosols are the real danger and can only addressed by other means. Air purification is the single most important defense in reducing harmful contaminants within our homes and places of work, especially in the absence of any outside air exchange.
Photo-Catalytic Process
Adding to method, Second Wind has placed a pure titanium catalyst plate parallel to our high intensity germicidal ultraviolet lamp creating a whole new dimension to the air purification process. This revolutionary addition creates a photo-catalytic oxidizing purification process which has been scientifically proven to destroy and decompose bio-aerosols and chemically oxidize volatile organic compounds into forming primary residual compounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Simply stated, the photo-catalytic process involves the chemical change of compounds into acceptable compounds at ambient temperatures by exposing them to free radical molecules of oxygen and hydrogen generated when ultraviolet light reacts with titanium dioxide. More about the Photo-Catalytic Process
UV Germicidal Protection
The specific energy found in the photons of UV-C ultraviolet light —
at a wavelength in the range of 2537 Angstroms — is just the right
amount to physically destroy the DNA of microorganisms. UVC penetrates the
outer structure of the cell and alters the DNA molecule, preventing
replication and causing cell death. Once the pollutant is exposed to the ultraviolet light and the hydroxyl radicals, a photo-chemical reaction takes place. This reaction is referred to as photo-catalytic oxidation. This oxidation process combined with the sterilization properties of ultraviolet light provides a very powerful tool in reducing volatile organic compounds and bio-aerosols. In fact, the oxidation power of hydroxyl radicals is second only to fluorine.
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) Technology
The use of Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) technology for the
neutralization of micro-organisms has been studied and documented since
1930s. This technology has been used for decades in hospitals, health-care
clinics, water treatment plants, the food industry and elsewhere to reduce
bacteria, mold and viruses. Micro-organisms are specifically sensitive to
the effects of invisible light at wavelengths of 2537 Angstroms due to the
resonance of this wavelength with molecular structures. In other words, the
micro-organisms have a specific sensitivity to this light and therefore
suffer a damaging effect to their molecular bond. The DNA structures of
these micro-organisms are damaged and are not able to replicate. The UV
band of sunlight is the main cause why micro-organisms die in the outside
air. The rate of morbidity varies from organism to organism but the total
effect remains the same. Our commercial grade UV-C lamps are utilizing a
much more concentrated level of UV light than that found in natural
sunlight.

Bio-aerosols comprise of microscopic live
particulate such as spores, pollen, bacteria and viruses. Bio-aerosols
present the greatest threat to our health. They are often airborne living
for days at a time. They also may exist in fluids or on solid surfaces,
even our own skin. You will never totally eliminate your exposure, but
incorporating a Second Wind Photo-Catalytic Air Purification System into
your home or place of work will create one dependable line of defense
against indoor airborne contact. Properly designed UV system installations
have proven highly effective in hospitals, schools, etc. Second Wind
ultraviolet germicidal lamps are 253.7 nm of light, optimal for air and
surface disinfection.
Second Wind uses a metal catalyst of Titanium to create the
PCO process. Titanium naturally has a very thin later of of oxidized film
on it called Titanium oxide (TiO2). The TiO2 film has a high refraction
ratio and when it is irradiated with UV light, less than 385 nm, the band
gap energy (the level of energy photons needed to be able to free electrons
from their atomic bonds is exceeded. What is created are electron /hole
pairs, hydroxyl radicals (OH), thus attracting molecules (such as volatile
organic compounds VOC's or bioaerosols) to the catalyst (Titanium).
The volatile organic compounds are oxidized by a reaction that takes place
during this process due to the fact that the OH radicals need to attach
themselves to something, and the contaminate is absorbed at the catalyst
surface. PCO will also kill and decompose any of the absorbed
bioaerosols.
“One effective method to destroy dilute concentrations of organic and
chlorinated organic pollutants in air is heterogeneous photocatalytic
oxidation (PCO), which uses a semiconductor catalyst such as TiO2 and
near-UV radiation to decompose contaminates...” “The large
number and variety of chemicals successfully treated by PCO indicates
potentially broad range of application.”
During the past decade, Second Wind has been a pioneer and leader in the development and manufacturing of ultraviolet air purification equipment and technologies. We have exhaustively tested our products to insure that we offer you, our customer, dependable solutions to indoor air pollution. To understand the significant role Second Wind Air Purifiers play in solving many of the indoor air quality issues that we face today, you must first understand the basic fundamentals and physical makeup of air pollution.
Site pages outline in easy to understand language, the components and terms used to describe poor indoor air quality. Much of the dangers found in our homes and places of work often can't be seen and may have no detectable odor, unfortunately these silent invaders are responsible for all types of allergies and disease, which for many results in a poor quality of life and sometimes even death. Few of us realize that items such as laundry and dishwasher detergent, polishes, paints, wood based building material, carpets, cosmetics, etc., generate measurable air pollutants.
Listed below are the categories that pollutants fall into:
1. Particulates: dust, smoke, etc.
2. Bioaerosols: micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria, mold, etc..
3. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): chemical or odor causing gases etc.
Click on the above pages for more detail and definitions.
Of the three categories of contaminants mentioned above, the Center for Disease Control has reported that bio-aerosols and volatile organic compounds combine for over 65% of our indoor air pollution and are the main contributors or causes of allergies, asthma, respiratory problems and general poor health.
The
Proof
Electronic air cleaners work by charging the
large dust particles passing through them with an electronic charge, either
positive or negative. The particles are than collected on oppositely
charged metal plates. With PCO, after the VOC's and bioaerosols are
attracted to the titanium, they are come into contact with the OH radicals
which change the contaminants molecular structure. PCO will kill and
decompose absorbed bioaerosols, as well as toxic VOC's and the odors they
produce. Now that PCO technology can be integrated into
new and existing heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems
everyone (even the most chemically sensitive) have an effect process for
removing and destroying low-level indoor air pollutants including mold,
bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Independent Tests
Photo-catalytic oxidation (PCO) technology has been proven to be an effective process for reducing and even destroying many indoor airborne pollutants. Industry Canada, the EPA, the University of Florida, the American Lung Association.....to name a few, have published information on their web sites confirming the positive affects of using PCO for improving our indoor environment.

The first 3 charts below contain University test results for the photo-catalytic reduction and control of Toluene, E.Coli, and Yeast. The reason for choosing these particular pollutants for testing, was based on the fact that their chemical / biological composition or characteristics make them reliable as models for determining the photo-catalytic effect on similar chemical and biological pathogens. All experiments were conducted in duplicate to certify their accuracy.

Note: Second Wind Air Purifiers have been tested effective in the destruction and reduction of bacteria viruses and fungus under various conditions. The effectiveness of our devices may vary depending upon the size of the area to be treated and the rate of air circulation. Your results may be higher or lower than those presented here. UV Lamps Could Reduce Worker
Sickness
By Emma Ross
Associated Press, London
Posted on Fri, Nov. 28, 2003
LONDON - Sickness among office workers in industrialized countries could
be reduced by using ultraviolet lamps to kill germs in ventilation systems,
new research indicates.
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, or UVGI, is sometimes used in hospital
ventilation systems to disinfect the air but is rarely incorporated into
office or other building ducts because there has been little evidence of a
benefit.
About 70 percent of the work force in North America and Western Europe
work indoors, and frequently have unexplained health problems such as
irritation of the eyes, throat and nose, as well as respiratory
illnesses.
In a study published this week in The Lancet medical journal, Canadian
scientists found that the technique reduced overall worker sickness by
about 20 percent, including a 40 percent drop in breathing problems.
"Installation of UVGI in most North American offices could resolve
work-related symptoms in about 4 million employees, caused by (germ)
contamination of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems," said
the study's leader, Dr. Dick Menzies from the Montreal Chest Institute at
McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
"The cost of UVGI installation could in the long run prove cost-effective
compared with the yearly losses from absence because of building-related
illness," he added.
A total of 771 employees from three different office buildings in Montreal
were involved with the study.
The ultraviolet lamps were aimed at the cooling coils and drip pans in the
ventilation systems of the buildings. The lights were turned on for four
weeks, then turned off for 12 weeks. The cycle was repeated three times for
almost a year.
The use of the lights resulted in a 99 percent reduction of the
concentration of germs on irradiated surfaces within the ventilation
systems.
Some weeks, use of the lamps resulted in a 20 percent overall reduction in
all symptoms for some workers; a 40 percent reduction in respiratory
symptoms and a 30 percent reduction in mucous problems. The benefits were
greatest for workers with allergies and for people who had never
smoked.
With the lights switched on, the frequency of muscle complaints among
nonsmokers halved and the incidence of work-related breathing problems
among them dropped by 60 percent.
Wladyslaw Jan Kowalski, an architectural engineer at Pennsylvania State
University's Indoor Environment Center, said the study may be a landmark in
proving that the technique could be cost-effective in commercial office
buildings.
Kowalski, who was not involved with the research, also said the approach
could be useful in the broader effort to combat contagious diseases such as
flu, SARS, tuberculosis and cold viruses.
"Theoretically, if a large number of schools, office buildings and
residences were modified, a number of airborne respiratory diseases could
be eradicated by interrupting the transmission cycle," Kowalski said.
"Reducing the transmission rate sufficiently would ... halt epidemics in
their path."
However, Roy Anderson, an infectious diseases expert at Imperial College
in London, said disinfecting ventilation systems by itself would not stamp
out outbreaks of contagious respiratory diseases.
"Transport is particularly important - buses, subways, trains and
airplanes," said Anderson, who was not connected with study. Disease also
spreads through personal contact.
"You've got multiple methods of transmission and for control, you need to
address all of them. It's an interesting new approach worth pursuing, but
it needs detailed investigation," Anderson said.
